OVERVIEW

This is a full-time, 10-month position. The Math Teacher will maintain a healthy learning environment that supports the Charlotte Preparatory School mission statement and upholds the four pillars of leadership: Respect, Integrity, Perseverance, and Courage.

The Middle School mathematics teacher will have the primary responsibility for planning, programming, and teaching a minimum of 4 sections of middle school math in alignment with Middle School curricular objectives; the courses involved could range from 5th grade math through Algebra and Geometry.  

 

Requirements

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small group instruction that align with the school’s mission and learning goals.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, etc. to facilitate higher-level thinking development.
  • Translate unit plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional and positive learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports and report cards.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences, phone calls, and e-mail to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, behavioral, and learning challenges. 
  • Participate cooperatively with the Head of Middle School in conformance with school guidelines.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day, such as recess, lunch, and breaks.
  • Participate in grade-level, division, and full faculty meetings, and serve on school committees as required.
  • Attend divisional and school-wide required events (e.g., prep-planning, Open Houses, conferences, etc.).
  • Serve as Student Advisor.
  • Supervise students during field trips, dances, overnight trips, and other events. 
  • Attend cross-divisional math meetings to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum across grade levels and subject areas.
  • Collaborate with faculty to design and refine units and assessments that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and academic growth.
  • Lead curriculum mapping initiatives to ensure continuity and clarity of learning objectives and outcomes.
  • Partner with division head and colleagues to ensure readiness for high school placement, including advanced level coursework.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those ready for high school-level coursework.
  • Attend professional development opportunities related to curriculum design, assessment, and instructional best practices and share gained knowledge.
  • Stay current on educational trends, research, and state/national standards to inform curriculum innovation and improvement.
  • Work closely with the high school placement team to ensure middle school curriculum aligns with secondary school expectations and provide insightful recommendations.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Middle School or Head of School.

 

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Math or related subject from accredited university required; Masters or other advanced degree preferred.
  • A valid teaching certificate is preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching experience in a middle school and independent school setting is preferred.
