Support for Hurricane Helene Recovery
October 17th, 2024
In the wake of an unprecedented natural disaster here in our home state, the entire Charlotte Prep community came together to support our neighbors in Western North Carolina. As said by our student council president, Liam R., "We here at Prep experienced loss after the lower school fire last year but we came back stronger with the help of our community. Now it is our turn to give back to the communities affected by Hurricane Helene." See the impact we had in just one week.

Members of Prep's student council acted quickly to organize a supply drive during carpools, drawing signs and posters to inspire donations. Our parents' association showed their support by assisting during carpool and shuttling the goods each day.

Students from every class also decorated cards to attach to the donations with messages of hope.

At the end of the week, Charlotte Prep joined forces with 7th Street Concerts to host a benefit concert with the Sphinx Virtuosi ensemble. These partners generously donated their time and talents, and while the concert was free and open to the public, guests were strongly encouraged to bring donations for the student council supply drive.

Over 300 people registered for the event and the donations for our neighbors in Western NC exceeded our wildest expectations.

Our student council president, Liam R., gave a heartfelt introduction at the concert and an inspirational interview with Queen City News.

The Sphinx Virtuosi is a self-conducted chamber orchestra comprised of 18 Black and Latino artists who are some of the most talented classical musicians in America. Their diverse program impressed our audience, which ranged from Charlotte Prep students to members of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. The next stop on their tour is Carnegie Hall!

Students filled a moving truck with essential goods donated at the concert, which they delivered to the YMCA with the help of parent volunteers.
We are so proud of the genuine and sustained effort our students put toward serving a community in need, and how that reflects on their character.
