How is a parent to navigate a digital world in which the average age to acquire a smartphone is 10 and many children begin requesting a phone long before the double digits?

Recently, one of our six-year-old students asked me how old I was. Being the wily older person I am, I turned the tables and asked this student how old he thought I was.
