Finding Our Home at Charlotte Prep
January 8th, 2026
My name is Melissa Steadman, and my husband and I have two daughters at Charlotte Prep. This is our fourth year here, and we couldn’t be more grateful to be part of this community.
When we first started looking for schools, we were drawn to Charlotte Prep because of its mission and pillars—the emphasis on character, community, respect, and academic excellence really spoke to us. But what truly stood out from the start was the feeling we got when we first stepped on campus. It was warm, welcoming, and deeply intentional. Every person we met—from teachers to administrators—seemed genuinely invested in helping children grow not just academically, but as confident, kind individuals.
For our family, that first impression was confirmed through the Early School Montessori program. The Montessori approach at Prep immediately caught our attention because it allowed our daughter to learn through curiosity and independence, while still being surrounded by teachers who guide her with such care and attentiveness. It’s a beautiful blend of structure and freedom, and it set the tone for her love of learning. It was a no-brainer to enroll our older daughter as soon as possible.
But what’s kept us here—the reason we know this is the right place for our family—goes far beyond academics. Our daughters love coming to school. They love their teachers, their friends, and the sense of belonging they feel every single day. I’ll never forget one summer when they actually didn’t want break to start. I remember that same feeling as a child growing up in a close-knit community—where school felt like an extension of home—and I see that same spirit alive here at Charlotte Prep.
The growth we’ve seen in them is remarkable. Their confidence has blossomed; they’re encouraged to speak up, to lead, to ask questions, and to show empathy toward others. They’re learning how to think critically, but also how to care deeply—and that’s something we value tremendously.
And then there’s the community. The friendships we’ve made at Prep have truly been a gift. From family events to volunteer opportunities to simply connecting on the playground, we’ve met people who have become genuine friends—people who share our values and who are invested in their children’s development in the same way. It’s a community that celebrates together, supports one another, and makes you feel known.
Charlotte Prep is the kind of school that meets children where they are and helps them discover who they can become. It’s big enough to offer incredible opportunities and small enough that every child is seen and valued. For our family, it’s been the perfect balance—a place where our girls are challenged, nurtured, and most importantly, happy.
