What's on the Horizon?
May 3rd, 2023
And just like that, it’s May! With the school year winding down, it’s natural for children to express a range of emotions as thoughts arise about leaving their current classroom and teacher, time away from friends, and moving into a new space, maybe even a new building. Excitement, nervousness, and sadness are three of the top contenders. Teachers ride a similar emotional wave coupled with the added sense of urgency as we try to make the most of our remaining time together. Not surprisingly, I am feeling this shift even more acutely as I begin to consider my transition out of the classroom (in the traditional sense).
Staying positive during this time is easier when I consider the many experiences I will enjoy through a new lens next year. And with Charlotte Prep’s Strategic Plan, there is so much to look forward to! Here are just a few of the initiatives and activities I am most excited about:
- Charlotte Prep is already known as a close and small community. In the coming months, we will implement purposeful retreats, events, and celebrations that further strengthen the bonds among families, faculty, and staff.
- We are enhancing and expanding students’ learning with more opportunities to engage in real-world and service learning experiences.
- The Lower School will reintroduce divisional assemblies! These gatherings will provide space and time for community building, group learning, and opportunities for our fourth grade students to standout as leaders of the division.
- I’m also very excited to be an integral member of the carpool team, offering a warm greeting each morning and a wave goodbye each afternoon.
It is not easy to predict the emotions that will arise during any transitional time and especially those involving some of our youngest learners. Whatever emerges for you and your children, take time to reflect on the growth and memories created this year and consider all the exciting new experiences on the horizon.

While their summer reading lists will surely include a few fun beach picks, many are also exploring titles that will inspire their work in the year ahead, whether through books on pedagogy, young adult novels, or picture books they may bring into their classrooms. See what our faculty and staff are adding to their summer stacks.
