As parents, we have the difficult task of teaching our children the utility and wonder of technology while protecting them from overexposure, overuse, and the myriad consequences it can have for the mind and body. 

One of the funnier moments of my career happened when I was the head of a school in New York City. I was new to my job and standing outside of school greeting students when a three-year-old approached and asked if I was the doorman.

The value of a truly excellent education does not merely come from what is being taught or the quality of instruction, but from the opportunities to apply that learning in the service of others. Thus, lessons in leadership ultimately become a mindset, not just an action or series of actions.

With our strategic plan Writing Our Next Chapternow launched and in motion, it seems a good time to reflect on why strategic plans so often deliver far less than they promise.

 Play clearly provides children with an experience that is joyful and fun. But it also helps children build and expand certain skills that are important parts of human development.

A member of an already incredibly impressive class that has earned early decision admissions at schools including Harvard, Kenyon, Northeastern, and NYU, this Prep lifer is off to Tulane next year with altruistic plans for the future. 

Visitors to our Montessori early school at Charlotte Prep always remark about the beautifully organized classrooms and the calm, soothing atmosphere. Creating this kind of setting is a central component of the Montessori education called the “prepared environment.”

As we head into the new year, I am thinking about the importance of fresh starts. Childhood is really just a succession of fresh starts.

This fall, Prep hosted two high school fairs, giving our middle school students the opportunity to meet admissions representatives and prepare for the next chapter in their education.

One of the signature features of our school is its size. At around 400 students, we are not too small or large.
